Suspension of all public worship

To help prevent the spread of coronavirus all acts of public worship have been suspended until further notice. Please do not try to attend a service with us.

Join us for a live streamed service

You can join us online for a small service streamed live from St Mary’s this morning at 10.00 am, at whitkirkchurch.org.uk/live. You can download or view the order of service for this from the same page.

If you can’t make the live service, you’ll be able to watch it in your own time once it’s finished.

This week has been both turbulent and challenging, with many fast-changing pieces of advice and with many people suddenly finding themselves doing new things outside of their comfort zone.

The team here at St Mary’s have been busy putting together a clear explanation of what we’re doing over the coming weeks and months, which you can find below.

We hope that this answers most of your questions regarding what is happening at Whitkirk. If you have others then please don’t hesitate to ask us. We can’t promise to have the answer, but we can promise you that we are doing everything we can to continue our work and to support everyone in our congregation and beyond.

Update on our response to the coronavirus pandemic

In light of the recent advice from Public Health England around social meetings, we have taken the decision to cancel our planned Wednesday morning Eucharist service this week, on the 18 March.

We are working closely with the Diocese of Leeds and constantly reviewing official advice, and will be posting a further update on all our services and meetings as soon as the immediate situation has been clarified. In the meantime we continue to recommend people follow the advice around avoiding unnecessary travel or contact with others, and to self-isolate if they or others in their household are suffering from the symptoms of coronavirus.

We know that this may be a difficult or worrying time for many, and we want to reassure you that everyone at St Mary’s is dedicated to supporting the whole community in any way that we can. If you or anyone else you know would like to talk to us about anything – even if it’s just to say hello – please get in touch.

Lent at Whitkirk

On Tuesdays during lent, beginning from Tuesday 3 March at 7.30 pm there will be a course based on the TV series Broken. It will be preceded by a Said Eucharist at 7.00 pm.

On Wednesdays from Wednesday 4 March after the 9.30 am Eucharist our lent course “By way of the heart” – R S Thomas and the Poetry of Faith offers a time to discuss and reflect on some poems and how they might impact on our lives.

Faithbook

This Thursday from 7.30 in the Brown Cow. A chance to explore something of the Christian Faith in a relaxed and friendly environment. Do come along with all those questions you’ve wanted to ask, and invite others to come too.

New footpath

Last Sunday we raised £105 towards the cost of the new church footpath from the sale of daffodils and soft toys for Easter. Thank you for your support and donations.

Coronavirus precautions

During the current situation in order to reduce the spread of any infection we have suspended the handshake offered as a sign of peace. Until further notice, the chalice has been suspended so please receive the sacrament in one kind only (the bread).

Funeral of Revd. Paul Summers

Paul’s funeral will be at Addingham Parish Church on 7th March at 12.00 pm. Archdeacon Bob Cooper will be officiating.

Paul was a former Vicar of St Mary’s and served his title Curacy at Manston St James the Great.

Service and meeting at 2.00 pm on Wednesday. All welcome

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Social

On Tuesday 25 February from 6.00 pm until 9.00 pm in the Community Centre. Pancakes, lemon juice, sugar and syrup provided, or bring your own toppings and any nibbles you fancy.

All ages welcome.

Ash Wednesday

Wednesday 26 February: Said Eucharist at 9.30 am and Sung Eucharist at 7.30 pm. Both services will include the Imposition of Ashes.

John Bell from the Iona Community will lead a Workshop on Saturday 6 June from 2.00 pm until 4.30 pm at Christ Church Halton. If you sing and are interested please see Lynne or Matthew to reserve a ticket, which cost £5.00, and bring a tin of food on the day for the local foodbank. Places limited.

Due to work being done on the Church path there will only be one Eucharist during this week, at 9.30 am on Wednesday in the Smeaton Room in the Community Centre. Gordon Cooper will be presiding.

Mothers’ Union

Prayer time in the Smeaton Room in the Community Centre at 10.10 am on Wednesday.

Palm crosses

If you would like your palm cross from last year to be burnt for use on Ash Wednesday please return it to the church.
