There are a variety of groups and activities connected with the Church or which meet in the Community Centre. Please contact the organisers as listed below or through the ‘contact us’ page.

There has always been a strong tradition of choral music as part of the worship at St Mary’s Whitkirk and we are always looking to recruit new choristers to ensure that this tradition is maintained both now and for future generations.

The choir comprises soprano, alto, tenor and bass singers and is open to boys and girls (from the age of 7) and to men and women. The choristers sing every Sunday morning at the Sung Eucharist and on the first Sunday of each month at Choral Evensong. They also sing once a year at a special civic service, attended by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, which is held in the Long Gallery at Temple Newsam House.

Choristers attend choir practices every Sunday as well as two Saturday rehearsals each month. If you would like more information about joining the choir and would like to arrange a short audition please email [email protected].

The Organist and Director of Music was appointed in March 2001. He is a member of the Royal College of Organists and an area consultant for the Royal School of Church Music. He is also the organist of the Whitkirk Deanery Choir.

Choir members have the opportunity to also sing as part of the Whitkirk Deanery Choir which was established in 2009 and comprises choristers from a number of church choirs in our local Church of England deanery. This choir has sung Choral Evensong at Leeds Minster, St Bartholomew’s Armley and, on ten occasions, at Ripon Cathedral. The choir has also led the singing at two other services at Ripon Cathedral – a ‘Diocesan Eucharist’ in 2015 and a service in 2017 called ‘Thy Kingdom Come’.

St Mary’s Whitkirk is an affiliated member of the Royal School of Church Music.
