Parish Pilgrimage to Ripon Cathedral

The parishioners of St Mary’s Whitkirk have been invited to a special pilgrimage at Ripon Cathedral on Saturday 1 October to celebrate the Cathedral’s 1350th anniversary. There will be the opportunity to travel by coach from Whitkirk to Ripon and you can reserve a seat by adding your name to the list in the Community Centre on Sundays after the morning service. The cost of the coach travel (per person) will be advised shortly.

The Dean of Ripon Cathedral, The Very Reverend John Dobson, will be leading our pilgrimage which will include a special Sung Eucharist at the High Altar. The Dean will preside at this service and the singing will be led by the Choir of St Mary’s Whitkirk. The parish visit will also include a ‘Children’s Trail’ in the Cathedral.

For more details about this event please pick up a leaflet in the Community Centre.

Time to Pray

“For me, prayer has always been a little bit of a quagmire. I’ve been used to throwing up quick prayers when I felt at the end of my tether, but I’ve struggled to have anything that was structured and consistent. Then Matthew invited me to be a part of Time to Pray.

“Three times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) there’s a gathering, all available online or in person on a Tuesday. These sessions provide a small moment in the day when we can pause and pray. They are guided by a leader and responder, using the Church of England’s free Time To Pray app, but also allow us to have a moment of intercession as well.

“Although I can only make it to the Wednesday evening sessions due to work commitments, I find that this is a moment of structured pause in the middle of the week. It’s a moment outside of the Sunday service to be reconnected to the church, pray with others and bring myself back on track in my worship.”

– Gemma

If you’d like to find out more about Time To Pray, visit our website at whitkirkchurch.org.uk/prayers or join us in the church at 5.00 pm on a Tuesday.

Passing the Peace

The PCC have agreed that we can reintroduce the sharing of the Peace in our service from this week. Traditionally, this has been a handshake shared with those nearest to you. Some will be pleased that we have done this and wondered why it has taken so long, but others will feel differently and both opinions are valid and to be respected.

When the words “Let us offer one another a sign of peace” are heard in the service please be mindful of that difference of opinion. If you can’t wait to offer your hands to others please remember that if someone keeps their hands together they are not withholding their peace from you; a smile and words of peace are enough. So for the next few weeks – just as it has been when our other normal practices have been reintroduced – it’ll likely feel a bit awkward as we find our way. Let us continue to be patient with one another, recognising and understanding the variety of opinion within our Church family.
