The Greeting

In the beginning
before time, before people,
before the world began.

God was.

Here and now
among us, beside us,
enlisting the people of earth
for the purposes of heaven.

God is.

In the future,
when we have turned to dust
and all we know has found its fulfilment.

God will be.

Not denying the world, but delighting in it,
not condemning the world, but redeeming it,
through Jesus Christ,
by the power of the Holy Spirit,

God was,
God is,
God will be.

From the Morning Liturgy A – The Iona Community

We come from scattered lives to meet with God.
Let us recognise his presence with us.

Silence is kept.

As God’s people we have gathered:

let us worship him together.

Words of Welcome and Introduction

Hymn

At the name of Jesus
ev’ry knee shall bow,
ev’ry tongue confess him
King of glory now;
’tis the Father’s pleasure
we should call him Lord,
who, from the beginning,
was the mighty Word.

At his voice creation
sprang at once to sight,
all the angels’ faces,
all the hosts of light,
thrones and dominations,
stars upon their way,
all the heav’nly orders
in their great array.

Humbled for a season,
to receive a name
from the lips of sinners
unto whom he came,
faithfully he bore it,
spotless to the last,
brought it back victorious
when from death he passed.

In your hearts enthrone him;
there let him subdue
all that is not holy,
all that is not true;
crown him as your captain
in temptation’s hour;
let his will enfold you
in its light and pow’r.

Truly, this Lord Jesus
shall return again,
with his Father’s glory,
with his angel train;
for all wreaths of empire
meet upon his brow,
and our hearts confess him
King of glory now.

Prayers of Penitence

The grace of God has dawned upon the world
with healing for all.
Let us come to him, in sorrow for our sins,
seeking healing and salvation.

cf Titus 2.11

We need your healing, merciful God;
Give us true repentance.
Some sins are plain to us,
Some escape us,
Some we cannot face.
Forgive us;
Set us free to hear your word to us;
Set us free to serve you.

Amen.

From St. James’ Piccadilly

May the almighty and merciful Lord
grant us pardon and forgiveness,
time for amendment of life,
and the grace and strength of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Collect

For The Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity

Let us pray.

Silence is kept.

O Lord,

we beseech you mercifully to hear the prayers of your people that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfill them, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

Reading from the Bible

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Philippians.

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.

Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Philippians 2.1-13

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Hymn

Father, hear the prayer we offer:
not for ease that prayer shall be,
but for strength that we may ever
live our lives courageously.

Not for ever in green pastures
do we ask our way to be;
but the steep and rugged pathway
may we tread rejoicingly.

Not for ever by still waters
would we idly rest and stay;
but would smite the living fountains
from the rocks along our way.

Be our strength in hours of weakness,
in our wand’rings be our guide;
through endeavour, failure, danger,
Father, be thou at our side.

Gospel

Alleluia, alleluia.

The word of the Lord endures for ever.
The word of the Lord is the good news announced to you.

Alleluia.

cf 1 Peter 1.25

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew

Glory to you, O Lord.

When Jesus entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, ‘By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?’ Jesus said to them, ‘I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?’

And they argued with one another, ‘If we say, “From heaven,” he will say to us, “Why then did you not believe him?” But if we say, “Of human origin,” we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet. So they answered Jesus, ‘We do not know.’

And he said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, “Son, go and work in the vineyard today.” He answered, “I will not”; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, “I go, sir”; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?’ They said, ‘The first.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, the tax-collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax-collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.

Matthew 21.23-32

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

An Affirmation of Faith

Let us affirm our faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God.

Though he was divine,
he did not cling to equality with God,
but made himself nothing.
Taking the form of a slave,
he was born in human likeness.
He humbled himself
and was obedient to death,
even the death of the cross.
Therefore God has raised him on high,
and given him the name above every name:
that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bow,
and every voice proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Amen.

cf Philippians 2.6-11

Prayers of intercession

Written and led by Gemma Burton, and ending with…

United with the Church across the world, let us pray with confidence using the words our Saviour taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.

Amen.

Hymn

Jesus is Lord! Creation’s voice proclaims it,
for by his pow’r each tree and flow’r was planned and made.
Jesus is Lord! The universe declares it,
sun, moon and stars in heaven cry: Jesus Is Lord!

Jesus is Lord! Jesus is Lord!
Praise him with hallelujahs, for Jesus is Lord!

Jesus is Lord! Yet from his throne eternal
in flesh he came to die in pain on Calv’ry’s tree.
Jesus is Lord! From him all life proceeding,
yet gave his life a ransom thus setting us free.

Jesus is Lord! Jesus is Lord!
Praise him with hallelujahs, for Jesus is Lord!

Jesus is Lord! O’er sin the mighty conqu’ror,
from death he rose and all his foes shall own his name.
Jesus is Lord! God sends his Holy Spirit
to show by works of power that Jesus Is Lord.

Jesus is Lord! Jesus is Lord!
Praise him with hallelujahs, for Jesus is Lord!

Closing Prayer and Responses

Let us pray.

Silence is kept.

Almighty God,
you have taught us through your Son
that love is the fulfilling of the law:
grant that we may love you with our whole heart
and neighbours as ourselves.

Amen.

For all that God can do within us,
for all that God can do without us,

Thanks be to God.

For all in whom Christ lived before us,
for all in whom Christ lives beside us,

Thanks be to God.

For all the Spirit wants to bring us,
for where the Spirit wants to send us.

Thanks be to God.

Christ has promised to be with us
in the world as in our worship.

Amen.

From the Morning Liturgy A – The Iona Community

Hymn

All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name!
let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
crown him Lord of all.

Crown him, ye martyrs of your God,
who from his altar call;
praise him whose way of pain he trod,
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
crown him Lord of all.

Ye prophets who our freedom won,
ye searchers, great and small,
by whom the work of truth is done,
now crown him, crown him, crown him,
crown him Lord of all.

Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race,
ye ransomed of the fall,
hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
crown him Lord of all.

Let ev’ry tribe and ev’ry tongue
to him their hearts enthral;
lift high the universal song,
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
crown him Lord of all.

The Grace

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore.

Amen.
