Jesus Christ, whom we worship, is our crucified, risen and ascended Lord and we have walked with him through his journey of love.

We have faced the agony of his suffering and death on a cross.
We have rejoiced at his bursting free from the bonds of death.
We have enjoyed his risen presence with us and his revelation of himself through the breaking of bread.

We have seen his return to the throne before which every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord.

And now, with the followers of his own time, we await the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, his gift to his people, through whom we make Christ known to the world.

The Liturgy of the Word

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.

Hymn

Please stand as the gradual hymn is sung. During the hymn a procession will make its way to the centre of the nave from where the Gospel for the day is read. To symbolise our desire to turn to Christ in our daily lives, at the end of the hymn we remain standing and turn to face the place where the Gospel is proclaimed.

Sermon

Baptism

The president moves, with the candidate for baptism and her supporters, to the baptismal font.

Presentation of the Candidate

The candidate for baptism is presented to the congregation and the president asks:

Emily, do you wish to be baptised?

I do.

The president addresses the whole congregation:

Faith is the gift of God to his people.
In baptism the Lord is adding to our number
those whom he is calling.
People of God, will you welcome Emily
and uphold her in her new life in Christ?

With the help of God, we will.

The Decision

The president addresses the baptism candidate:

In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him.

Therefore I ask Emily, and all those who have been baptised:

Do you turn away from sin?

I do.

Do you reject evil?

I do.

Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?

I do.

Do you trust in him as Lord?

I do.

Signing with the Cross

The president makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of the candidate for baptism, saying:

Emily, Christ claims you for his own.
Receive the sign of his cross.

Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified.

Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ
against sin, the world, and the devil,
and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life.

May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness,
restore in you the image of his glory,

Prayer over the Water

Praise God who made heaven and earth,

Profession of Faith

Baptism

Emily, is this your faith?

Welcome

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism:
Emily, by one Spirit we are all baptised into one body.

we are children of the same heavenly Father;

The congregation greets the newly-baptised and all return to their seats.

Preparation of the Table

The table is prepared, and the oil of Chrism blessed by the Bishop on Maundy Thursday, bread and wine are placed upon it.

A hymn is sung. During this hymn a collection, our financial offering in support of the work of the church both at St. Mary’s and across our diocese, is taken.

The Lord’s Prayer

Being made one by the power of the Spirit,

Breaking of the Bread

The president breaks the consecrated bread.

We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many, we are one body,

The Agnus Dei is sung as the bread is broken for distribution.

Invitation to Communion

Alleluia. Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

The president and people receive communion. All baptised Christians are welcome to receive the sacrament. Please follow the guidance offered by the stewards.

If you are not baptised, or would prefer to not receive, then do still come forward for a blessing bringing this book with you so the president knows your intention.

The sacrament is available in both kinds, however if you wish to only receive the bread please do so and then return to your place. Receiving in one kind is still considered to be full communion by the Church of England. Please do not dip bread in the wine (sometimes called ‘intincting’).

Once all have received communion, the president will move to the Holy Trinity Chapel to offer anointing with Oil of Chrism to the newly-baptised, and to any who wish to receive it.  Please follow the directions of the stewards as you come forward for anointing.

For those at home it might be helpful to use this prayer during the distribution and anointing.

Come, Holy Spirit, come upon us,
come around us, come within us;
come to lead us, come to guide us,
that we may work in your power,
and rest in your presence:
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Father,

The Dismissal

Blessing of Light

The ministers go to the Easter Candle.

Blessed are you, sovereign God, overflowing in love.
With Pentecost dawns the age of the Spirit.
Now the flame of heaven rests on every believer.
Strong and weak, women and men tell out your word;
the young receive visions, the old receive dreams.
With the new wine of the Spirit
they proclaim your reign of love.
Amid the birth pangs of the new creation

Lighting of Candles

The newly-baptised receives a lighted candle, lit from the Easter Candle.

God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness
and has given us a place with the saints in light.

Emily, you have received the light of Christ;
walk in this light all the days of your life.

Shine as a light in the world
to the glory of God the Father.

Each member of the congregation has a candle which is lit as the light of the Easter Candle is passed on.

Commission

When all the candles are lit the president says:

For fifty days we have celebrated the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over the powers of sin and death. We have proclaimed God’s mighty acts and we have prayed that the power that was at work when God raised Jesus from the dead might be at work in us.

As part of God’s Church here in Whitkirk, Colton and beyond I call upon you to live out what you proclaim.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, will you dare to walk into God’s future, trusting him to be your guide?

By the Spirit’s power, we will.

Will you dare to embrace each other and grow together in love?

We will.

Will you dare to share your riches in common and minister to each other in need?

We will.

Will you dare to pray for each other until your hearts beat with the longings of God?

We will.

Will you dare to carry the light of Christ into the world’s dark places?

The Easter Candle is extinguished in silence.

Today we have remembered the coming of God’s power on the disciples and we invite that same Spirit to drive us out into the wild places of the world.
