Invitation to Confession

As we prepare to celebrate the mystery of God’s love,
revealed in Word and Sacrament,
let us call to mind our sins.

Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

in what we have thought,
in what we have said and done,
through ignorance, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault.
We have wounded your love,

The Collect

The president introduces a period of silent prayer with the words ‘Let us pray’.

Almighty and everlasting God,

The Liturgy of the Word

A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Hymn

Please stand as the gradual hymn is sung. During the hymn a procession will make its way to the centre of the nave from where the Gospel for the day is read. To symbolise our desire to turn to Christ in our daily lives, at the end of the hymn we remain standing and turn to face the place where the Gospel is proclaimed.

The Liturgy of Confirmation

The Presentation of the Candidates

The candidates are presented to the congregation.

To the candidates for confirmation the Bishop says:

Have you been baptised in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit?

Candidates: I have.

Are you ready with your own mouth and from your own heart to affirm your faith in Jesus Christ?

Candidates: I am.

To the congregation the Bishop says:

Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome these candidates and uphold them in their life in Christ?

All: With the help of God, we will.

The Decision

The Bishop addresses the candidates saying:

In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask:

Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?

Candidates: I reject them.

Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil?

Candidates: I renounce them.

Do you repent of the sins that separate us
from God and neighbour?

Candidates: I repent of them.

Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?

Candidates: I turn to Christ.

Do you submit to Christ as Lord?

Candidates: I submit to Christ.

Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life?

Candidates: I come to Christ.

May God, who has given you the desire to follow Christ, give you the strength to continue in the Way.

All: Amen.

The Profession of Faith

The Bishop addresses the whole congregation.

Brothers and Sisters, I ask you to declare, together with these candidates, the faith of the Church.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father, who made all things?

We believe and trust in Him.

Do you believe and trust in His Son, Jesus Christ,
who redeemed this world?

We believe and trust in Him.

Do you believe and trust in His Holy Spirit,
who gives life to the people of God?

We believe and trust in Him.

This is the faith of the church.

This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Confirmation

The Bishop stands before those who are to be confirmed and says:

Our help is in the name of the Lord,

All: who has made heaven and earth.

Blessed be the name of the Lord,

All: now and for ever. Amen.

The Bishop extends his hands towards those to be confirmed and says:

Almighty and ever living God,
you have given these your servants new birth
in baptism by water and the Spirit,
and have forgiven them all their sins.
Let your Holy Spirit rest upon them:
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding; Amen
the Spirit of counsel and inward strength; Amen
the Spirit of knowledge and true godliness; Amen
and let their delight be in the fear of the Lord. Amen.

The parish priest presents each candidate to the Bishop.

The Bishop addresses each candidate by name:

N, God has called you by name and made you his own.

He lays his hand on the head of each, saying:

Confirm, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit.

All: Amen.

The Bishop invites the congregation to pray for the newly confirmed.

Defend, O Lord, these your servants
with your heavenly grace,
that they may continue yours for ever,
and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more
until they come to your everlasting kingdom.

Prayers of Intercession

Following an invitation to pray from the intercessor we kneel or sit to pray. The following response is used:

Lord, in your mercy

Hear our prayer.

Then at the end:

Merciful Father,

accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,

The Liturgy of the Sacrament

Please stand with the president.

The Peace

God has made us one in Christ.
He has set his seal upon us,
and, as a pledge of what is to come,
has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts.

The peace of the Lord be always with you

and also with you.

The deacon says:

Let us offer one another a sign of Christ’s peace.

This is usually a handshake shared with those near you.

Preparation of the Table

The table is prepared, and bread and wine are placed upon it.

A hymn is sung. During this hymn a collection, our financial offering in support of the work of the church both at St. Mary’s and across our diocese, is taken.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Breaking of the Bread

The president breaks the consecrated bread.

We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.

The Agnus Dei is sung as the bread is broken for distribution.

Jesus, Lamb of God,
have mercy on us.

Jesus, bearer of our sins,
have mercy on us.

Jesus, redeemer of the world,
grant us peace.

Invitation to Communion

God’s holy gifts
for God’s holy people.

Jesus Christ is holy,
Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

The president and people receive communion. All baptised Christians are welcome to receive the sacrament. Please follow the guidance offered by the stewards.

If you are not baptised, or would prefer to not receive, then do still come forward for a blessing bringing this book with you so the president knows your intention.

The sacrament is available in both kinds, however if you wish to only receive the bread please do so and then return to your place. Receiving in one kind is still considered to be full communion by the Church of England. Please do not dip bread in the wine (sometimes called ‘intincting’).

To the words “The Body/Blood of Christ” the communicant replies “Amen”.

For those at home it might be helpful to use this prayer during the distribution.

God of glory,
the end of our searching,
help us to lay aside
all that prevents us from seeking your kingdom,
and to give all that we have
to gain the pearl beyond all price,
through our Saviour Jesus Christ.
